(PharmaNewsWire.Com, October 09, 2017 ) Colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the large intestine and the distal part of the small bowel by using a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a fiberoptic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. Colonoscopy is considered as the gold standard of colorectal cancer screening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Colonoscopy helps to find colon polyps, ulcers, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding. Depending on initial findings, screenings should be performed every 5-10 years thereafter. During a colonoscopy procedure, tissue samples are collected to find abnormal growths in the intestine. The colonoscope is a thin, flexible tube, which is in the range of 125 cm-183 cm long size. A small video camera is fixed to the colonoscopy devices, so that the physician can take pictures or video of the colon. The colonoscopy devices can be used to look at the whole colon and the lower part of the small intestine.
